Here's what we were working with - an old wooden retaining wall that had clearly run its course. Rotting timber, shifting sections, and zero structural integrity left. It wasn't just an eyesore. It was actively failing at its one job, which is holding the yard in place and keeping soil from sliding down onto the driveway.

We pulled all of it out and replaced it with 100 linear feet of Versa-Lok retaining wall block. Versa-Lok is a solid choice for this kind of job. The interlocking block system is built to handle serious lateral soil pressure, and it doesn't rot, warp, or shift the way treated lumber eventually will. It's a permanent fix, not a patch.

The scope of this one went beyond just the main wall. We also built out a tiered garden bed section near the front of the home and a full staircase to connect the upper yard to the driveway level. Getting the steps right matters - each tread needs to be level, consistent, and tied into the wall structure properly so nothing settles or separates down the road.

What we ended up with is a wall system that does exactly what a retaining wall is supposed to do. It holds the grade, protects the driveway edge, and gives the yard a clean, finished look at the same time. The difference between the before and after on a job like this is hard to miss.

Retaining walls are one of those things homeowners tend to put off until the problem gets bad enough to ignore. If you've got an aging timber wall or you're noticing soil movement near your driveway or foundation, it's worth getting eyes on it sooner rather than later.
