A lot of front yards in Blaine have the same problem - flat, featureless lawn that just kind of sits there. No definition. No focal point. Nothing that makes the house stand out from the street. That's exactly what we were working with here, and the solution was a curved block retaining wall that creates a raised planting bed right in the front yard.

The wall itself wraps in a smooth arc, giving the whole space a clean, intentional shape. We used a textured concrete block that has a natural stone look without being high-maintenance. The corner transitions and the curve radius are the parts that most people don't think about until they try to do it themselves - getting those right is what separates a wall that looks built from a wall that looks placed.

Once the wall was up, we backfilled, brought in fresh mulch, and planted a mix of low-growing shrubs and perennials around a center tree. The plants are still small right now, which is by design. They'll fill in over the next couple of seasons and the wall will hold the bed in place the whole time - no mulch washing into the lawn, no soil erosion, no annual edging battles.

What we really like about this particular setup is how much it changes the feel of the property from the street. The raised bed gives the yard some height variation, and the structured wall ties into the architecture of the house. It's not decorative for the sake of it - it actually does a job. In Minnesota, where freeze-thaw cycles can destroy landscape edging over time, a properly installed block wall is one of the more durable investments you can make in your yard.
