Flagstone Patio With Black Granite Joints and French Drain

Flagstone looks great - but if the base and drainage aren't done right, you end up with a patio that settles, shifts, and holds water in all the wrong places. That's the part most people don't think about until it's already a problem.

On this one, we used black 1/4" granite as the joint fill between the flagstone. It gives the whole surface a sharp, clean look - the dark lines between the stones create a really nice contrast. But beyond looks, the fill material and the base underneath are what actually determine how the patio holds up over time.

The other piece we built into this job was a French drain in the low spots where water tends to collect. If you've ever had a corner of your yard that just stays wet, you know how frustrating that is. A French drain moves that water away from the surface and out to where it won't cause issues - so the patio stays dry and usable instead of turning into a puddle after every rain.

Flagstone is one of our favorite materials to work with because no two layouts are exactly the same. Every piece of stone gets placed by hand, and the finished surface has a natural, organic feel that you just can't get with pavers or concrete. Paired with the right landscape design around it, a flagstone patio can completely change how you use your backyard.
